Tipping points: Early warning and wishful thinking

چکیده

[1] The causes for and possible predictions of rapid climate changes are poorly understood. The most pronounced changes observed, beside the glacial terminations, are the Dansgaard‐Oeschger events. Present day general circulation climate models simulating glacial conditions are not capable of reproducing these rapid shifts. It is thus not known if they are due to bifurcations in the structural stability of the climate or if they are induced by stochastic fluctuations. By analyzing a high resolution ice core record we exclude the bifurcation scenario, which strongly suggests that they are noise induced and thus have very limited predictability. Early Warning Signals of Tipping-Points in Blog Posts

Complex systems in a variety of disciplines are punctuated by tipping-points, where the system undergoes an abrupt rapid change of state. Early warning signals of such tipping-points can be detected via a concept called critical slowing down by examining a set of statistical metrics. A method based on critical slowing down is used to examine the sentiment of a localized set of blog posts in the...

Halting the Climate Dominoes: Mitigation Policy Under Interacting Tipping Points

Scientific research highlights the possibility that man-made greenhouse gas emissions can trigger irreversible regime shifts in the climate system, so-called tipping points. The literature is particularly concerned with the possibility that a first regime shift, e.g., reinforcing the temperature response to emissions, significantly increases the likelihood of other tipping points, starting a do...

Playing the Climate Dominoes: Tipping Points and the Cost of Delaying Policy

Greenhouse gas emissions can trigger irreversible regime shifts in the climate system, known as tipping points. Multiple tipping points affect each other’s probability of occurrence (a “domino effect”) and they reinforce each other’s economic impacts. Today’s optimal mitigation policy has to consider all possible future interactions between tipping points, economic activity, and policy response...

Development of wishful thinking in 7 to 14 year-old Iranian children and adolescences

Several studies have investigated wishful thinking or desirability bias in children and adults, while no research has been conducted on the evolution of wishful thinking in childhood and adolescence. The present research aims to investigate the evolution of wishful thinking in Iranian children and adolescents aged 7-14. This study is an evolutional one with a cross- sectional method. The statis...

Slowing down as an early warning signal for abrupt climate change.

In the Earth's history, periods of relatively stable climate have often been interrupted by sharp transitions to a contrasting state. One explanation for such events of abrupt change is that they happened when the earth system reached a critical tipping point. However, this remains hard to prove for events in the remote past, and it is even more difficult to predict if and when we might reach a...
